Spey style, Two Handed Long Rod
Below are videos demonstrating spey casting using a two handed long rod.

Spey, Long Rod
This video demonstrates a winter spey setup whereby a 75' long belly line is used and very little running line is stripped in after the cast. This hence leads to less icing on the tip top guide in sub-zero temperatures.
The line is a custom line that has a interchangeable multi tip and a intermediate sink compensator for the mid portion. The rod is TFO's 15' Deer Creek 8/9 weight. This video shows a Snake roll cast, and I am attempting to get distance with a Scandinavian short stroke so as to achieve less wear and tear from prolonged casting. |
Spey, Long Rod, Short strokeThis video demonstrates a long head setup with a short stroke, Scandinavian casting style. This dispels the notion that long line is not possible with a short stroke (i.e. the old adage Long line long stroke).
The key in this cast, as in all cast, is the clean pickup, whereby the tip does not rotate off the pickup plane too much or it leads to a cascade of casting errors. The total length of the XLT line is 127' plus 15' leader, giving a total of 142' from backing knot to fly. |

13.5' Trouter wet fly rod
This rod has a stiff tip, allowing me to cast almost the entire XLT 5 weight line with a Muddler Head/ Smelt body between 3-4" long.
This is a fun rod to swing streamers just beneath the surface for trout. Just my other videos, this long rod/ long line combination utilizes a short stroke to get a somewhat bulky fly out there. |
