Barny presented to Flyfisher’s Club of Oregon on Tuesday, October 13, 2015 and gave a very compelling demonstration of Scandi and Skagit casting systems and how to get more with less. This was the first time Barny had presented to the club and he was very successful and the members were totally engaged and interested in the presentation. I would highly recommend Barny Wong to anyone wishing to learn more about spey fishing with Scandi and Skagit systems, as well as anyone interested in learning from a fresh perspective. Barny takes a slightly different approach to his casting and demonstrates and explains his approach with style and thoughtfulness. His ability to communicate his approach has everything to do with the success of his presentation.
1. Communication skills - Barny has a wonderful, thoughtful, calm demeanor and explains his subject with grace, a style all his own and patience.
2. People skills - Barny has a wonderful ability to connect with people of all skill levels. He is a very good listener and addresses questions thoroughly and thoughtfully.
3. Ability to connect and resonate - Great ability to connect and definitely resonates with everyone who sees his presentation. You won’t forget Barny Wong.
4. Delivery -Delivery was interesting, fresh and different. Thought provoking, indeed.
5. Empowerment skills - Enticing presentation that appealed to everyone of all levels. Barny made everyone feel like they could go out on the river and cast as far as he could.
6. Other – Wonderful presentation that is not to be missed!

I thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent on the river and the lesson. I was glad you focused on the fundamentals and started me with the basics and broke down the parts of the double spey so I got started from the ground up with a good understanding and repeatable method to perform the cast. I was glad that when I did not execute as planned you asked me to explain why the cast did not function as it was intended. This questioning allowed me to self-diagnose how to fix or improve my casting after the lesson was over and continue to improve on my own. I enjoyed your teaching style and it fit with my wanting to learn. When I get back in town, I will contact you and certainly plan to continue with another lesson to advance my learning and enjoyment of this style of casting. Thanks and best to you... Dick Crimm
This guy is worth the investment if you want to become a better caster! Not only can Barney get complete beginners casting efficiently, but Barney creates a very customizable lesson for experienced casters. He was able to see where my cast was losing energy and effectively explain the methods to keep that lost energy within the cast. I want to highlight that Barney does not have a standardized lesson that he has in mind before he meets you. He quickly assesses your capabilities and is able to take what you have to a whole nutha level! Thanks Barney... Kyle Dodson
Barny is skilled at his craft and ability to pass along his expertise to others. He takes the time to understand your current capabilities, then customizes a series of sessions that help you get to your desired goal. Additionally, he is professional and always on time. I will recommend Barny to anyone who is looking to start or perfect their fly fishing hobby.... John Stevens
Barney is mighty fine instructor. Five minutes into the lesson I was thinking I'd just be doing the same old snap-t I'd always used, but by the end of the lesson I felt I had a solid understanding of the mechanics of airborne anchor casts and had even successfully executed a few.... Chris Cole
I was invited on a steel head excursion with several experienced fly fishermen. I never picked up a fly rod, but needed to learn fast! 6 hours with Barny and I was able to cast successfully and keep up with the fishing party. Barny is a pleasure to learn from; he is calm and focuses on your learning, rather than boasting about his own accomplishments. I will definitely be returning to Barny for more lessons in the future. ......Tim Murphy
My name is Brenda from Honolulu, Hi. I met Barny while visiting some friends. I tried fly casting for awhile and was ready to give up. Barny offered to give me a lesson and I reluctantly agreed. Within the one hour period of instruction, he analyzed my problems and showed me how to correct them. After returning to Honolulu, I went out and practiced the principles Barny taught me. A few days ago, I caught my first bonefish on a fly on the flats. I never realized a bone could run as fast and far as it did. I was thrilled. Thanks Barny..... Brenda Yuen
His lesson was worth its weight in gold. He had me a better spey caster in no time. Helping me slow down and break down all the points in the cast was very productive. A great teacher.... Dan Glassford
I had the opportunity to fish with Barny recently and as a novice spey fisherman I needed all the help I could get. Barny explained the art spey casting in a very clear way. The techniques he uses to teach are easy to understand and his lessons really stick with you. If your interested in learning to spey fish Barny is the guy you want teaching you. Thanks again... Nick Simon
I was able to spend a little bit of time with Barny on the water and I must say that this dude has spey casting figured out. After watching me cast for a few minutes he was able to deduce how I could get more power from my cast and where to direct my energy to get the best result. If you are looking for a casting instructor this man is 100% worth it... Cassie Beattie
I have fly fished casually most of my life and needed to improve my techniques to go to the next level. Two sessions with Barny and he has taught me the skills to improve my casting and analytical skills to keep improving.... Gary Cook
I am glad I met you (as an instructor). My cast is 200% better (than before taking the class)... Doug Brenner
Was an honor to see you fish, even more so to have quality conversation... A rarity these days. Thanks for the depth of character and the love. More to fishing than catching fish, indeed... Jeff Fisher
Hello Barny! My name is Alex Cruickshank and we met briefly on the river at the Grand River Spey Clave in Paris, Ontario back on September 29th. My brother, Peter, and I were very impressed with your Spey casting. If you every find that you are coming to southwestern Ontario, and you have some time, we would love to connect with you for a Spey casting lesson. (We are located in Toronto, and, unfortunately, don't ever have occasion to travel to Dearborn.) I hope the fall steelhead season is being generous to you. Best regards, Alex PS: I really enjoyed your website...especially the Spey casting videos....
Barney, great article on tailing loops...Mac Brown said the same thing 15 years ago in his book "casting angles". It's very technical, but is still the best book around on physics and the many kinds of casting styles. Check it out sometime....Bill Toney
